Strings Privacy Policy
Effective date: November 5, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what information the Strings mobile game (the “App”) collects, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices and rights you have. It applies to the App on iOS and Android and to the Strings website, stringsgame.com (including its Daily, level and invite pages, /support and /delete-data).
1. Who we are
The App and stringsgame.com are published by Frostbyte Entertainment LLC (“Frostbyte”, “we”, “us”), a limited liability company organized in Delaware, USA.
- Postal address: 611 South DuPont Highway, Suite 102, Dover, DE 19901, USA
- Privacy contact: hello@stringsgame.com
- Support: hello@stringsgame.com
For the purposes of the EU and UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Frostbyte is the “controller” of the personal data described here, except where a partner acts as an independent controller (see section 6).
2. The short version
- No sign-up needed. Strings works without an account and never asks for your name, phone number or password to play. When you first open the App it creates a random player ID on your device.
- An account is optional. If you choose to back up and sync your progress, you sign in with Apple, Google or a code sent to your email, and we keep your email address with your account (section 3.11).
- Your game data is stored on our servers under that random ID, so that leaderboards, Leagues, friends, trophies and progress work.
- Other players can see your display name, avatar and game stats. You can hide yourself from leaderboards in Settings.
- The free version shows ads. Google AdMob and the ad networks that bid through it collect device and advertising identifiers to show and measure ads. On iPhone, ads are personalized only if you allow tracking. In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland we ask for your consent first. Elsewhere you can turn on Settings › Privacy & community › Do not sell or share my info.
- We measure the game and our own ads with Google Analytics for Firebase and the Meta SDK, and with Tenjin if we enable it.
- Purchases are handled by Apple, Google and RevenueCat. We never see your card details.
- You can ask us to delete your data at any time: Settings › Support › Delete my data, or our delete-data page (section 12).
3. Information we collect
3.1 Identifiers
| Identifier | What it is | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Player ID | A random identifier (a UUID) created on your device the first time you open the App. It is not derived from your device hardware or your identity. | Created by the App, stored on your device and on our servers. It is also your customer ID at RevenueCat (our purchase provider) and appears in the subject line of emails you send from Contact support, Send feedback or Delete my data in Settings. On Android, your device backup may restore it after a reinstall. We do not give it to the Meta SDK or Tenjin. |
| Firebase app instance ID | A random ID that Google Analytics for Firebase assigns to this installation. | Google Firebase SDK. |
| Advertising identifier | Apple’s IDFA or Google’s Advertising ID (AAID). | Your device. On iPhone and iPad it can be read only if you tap “Allow” on Apple’s tracking prompt. On Android you can reset or delete it in your device settings. |
| Other device identifiers | Identifiers that SDKs use for fraud prevention, frequency capping and measurement, such as Apple’s identifier for vendors (IDFV), Android’s App Set ID and the Meta SDK’s anonymous app ID. | The Google Mobile Ads SDK, Firebase, the ad networks and measurement partners in section 6, and RevenueCat. |
| Friend invite codes | A random code inside a friend-invite link you create. | Created on our servers when you create an invite. |
3.2 Game profile and gameplay data stored on our servers
We store the following, linked to your Player ID:
- Profile: your display name (the App assigns a name like “PLAYER12345678” until you choose one), your avatar, your title, whether you appear on leaderboards, when you last changed your name, the date you started playing and when you were last active.
- Puzzle results: for each puzzle you complete or skip: the puzzle number or Daily date, the version of the puzzle you played, when you finished it, how long it took, how many hints you used, how many theme words and other words you found, the longest word you found, the list of words you entered in order, and the App version.
- Stats and achievements: totals and streaks (puzzles completed, days played, play time, hints used, fastest and slowest solves, perfect solves and similar), the trophies you have unlocked and when, and a progress summary (levels, spools, collections and stitches completed, daily goal, and the App version that sent it).
- Leagues and leaderboards: your weekly points (including points from Encore replays), levels and Dailies counted, your League tier and bracket, ranks, medals, promotions and demotions, reward hints claimed, and your results on the Daily board.
- Friends: who you are friends with, the invites you created and when they expire.
- Puzzle ratings: if you rate a puzzle with a thumbs up or thumbs down, the rating, the puzzle and its version, and when you rated it.
- Safety and moderation: reports you file about other players (the reason you chose and when), the number of reports about you, and whether your display name has been hidden pending review.
- Feature tests: which version of a feature you were assigned to when we test changes, plus the context we need to read the test: your notification permission status, your time zone offset, the local hour, and the App version.
- Subscription status: whether you have Strings Premium or a legacy “Remove Ads” purchase, the product, expiry date, whether it is a trial, whether it will renew, and the platform (iOS or Android).
3.3 Purchase information
When you subscribe to Strings Premium or restore a purchase, the payment is processed by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play). We never receive your name, card number or billing address. Through RevenueCat we receive: the product, price and currency, the store country, transaction and subscription identifiers, trial and renewal status, cancellation or billing-issue events, your App Tracking Transparency status and simple labels about where in the App the purchase started (for example, which paywall you saw).
Where your choices allow it (section 7), the App also gives RevenueCat your device’s advertising and device identifiers and the Meta SDK’s anonymous app ID, so that RevenueCat’s servers can report trials and purchases to Meta and Google for ad measurement (section 3.6). This does not happen while Do not sell or share my info is on.
3.4 Usage and device information (analytics)
Google Analytics for Firebase collects information about how the App is used, linked to the Firebase app instance ID and not to your display name:
- Events: for example, starting and finishing a level, using a hint, viewing a screen, opening a notification, sharing a result, rating a puzzle, viewing or closing the paywall, starting a trial, seeing or completing a rewarded ad, ad revenue events (including which ad network served the ad), and the answers you gave to consent and notification prompts.
- Settings and status: for example, your theme, sound and motion settings, whether notifications are enabled, your tracking-permission status, your League tier, your board style, your Premium state and which feature-test groups you are in.
- Device and app information: device model, operating system version, language, screen size, App version, and approximate location (country, region or city) that Google derives from your IP address.
- Advertising identifier: on iPhone only if you allow tracking; on Android unless you have deleted or limited it.
3.5 Advertising data
If you do not have Premium, the App shows banner, interstitial and rewarded video ads. Google AdMob and the ad networks that bid for our ad space through AdMob mediation (section 6.2) collect, directly from the App: advertising and device identifiers, IP address, approximate location derived from it, device and network information, the App’s identity, and how you interact with ads (views, taps, video completions). On Android, Google’s Privacy Sandbox APIs (Topics and Attribution Reporting) may be used. Whether ads are personalized depends on your choices (section 7).
3.6 Measuring our own ads (attribution)
When we advertise Strings in other apps and on websites, we measure which campaigns lead to installs and play:
- Google Ads: we use Google Analytics for Firebase events (for example first open, finishing the tutorial, reaching levels 3 and 10, and coming back the next day) to measure our Google Ads campaigns. Trials and purchases reach Google Analytics from RevenueCat’s servers.
- Meta (Facebook) SDK: the App includes Meta’s SDK to measure our Facebook and Instagram ads. It sends Meta app installs and app opens, a few game milestones (finishing the tutorial, reaching levels 3 and 10, and coming back the next day) and the ads you see in the App together with the ad revenue they earned, along with device information and, where permitted, your advertising identifier. The SDK does not send trials or purchases: RevenueCat’s servers report those to Meta (Meta’s Conversions API). Meta does not receive your Player ID, display name or the words you play.
- Tenjin (if enabled): Tenjin is a mobile measurement partner that we may switch on to attribute installs from ad networks such as AppLovin. While it is on, it receives your advertising identifier (where permitted), IP address, device information, the same app events as above and, from RevenueCat’s servers, trials and purchases. It is off unless we enable it.
- The Meta SDK and Tenjin follow the consent rules in section 7: in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland they run only if your choices allow personalized advertising, and they stay off when your consent status cannot be confirmed. With Do not sell or share my info on, the Meta SDK uses Limited Data Use and Tenjin is opted out.
- On iPhone, if you do not allow tracking, measurement uses Apple’s privacy-preserving SKAdNetwork / AdAttributionKit, which does not identify you.
3.7 Support and feedback
If you email us (including from Contact support, Send feedback or Delete my data in Settings, or through the contact form on our website), we receive your email address, your message and anything you attach. The App pre-fills your Player ID in the subject line so that we can find your data; you may remove it. A Delete my data email also includes your Firebase app instance ID, so that we can delete your analytics data.
3.8 Diagnostics
The App does not include a crash-reporting SDK. If you have agreed in your device settings to share diagnostics with app developers, Apple or Google may provide us with crash reports and performance data that do not identify you. Our ad, analytics and measurement SDKs also collect technical performance data (for example, ad load failures).
3.9 Information kept only on your device
Your in-progress puzzles, settings (theme, sound, haptics, motion), notification schedule, hint balance and cosmetic items, the list of players you have hidden, your consent and privacy choices and various caches are stored on your device. We do not receive these, except where they are also included in the data described above.
3.10 What we do not collect
We do not collect your real name, email address (unless you email us or create an optional account), phone number, contacts, photos, microphone audio, precise location, health data or payment card details. The App’s sounds play from the App; it never records audio.
3.11 Your optional account
Strings works the same without an account. An account only backs up your progress and syncs it between your devices and stringsgame.com. You choose whether to create one, under Settings › Account; Strings never interrupts a puzzle to ask.
If you sign in with Apple or Google, they give us your email address (with Apple’s Hide My Email, a private relay address) and may share your name. If you sign in with a code, you type your email address and our email provider sends the code to it. We use your email only to sign you in and to reply when you write to us. Your name on leaderboards stays the display name you choose.
Your account holds the same game data as your Player ID, and whether you have Strings Premium, so your progress comes back when you sign in on another device. Sign-in runs on Supabase, which also stores your game data, and keeps sign-in records such as IP addresses and times for security.
3.12 Playing on stringsgame.com
The web game saves your progress in your browser’s storage and in our own cookies, including one that remembers you have played so shared links open the game. The first time you finish a puzzle there, it also saves your progress on our servers under a guest Player ID, kept in a cookie.
Google Analytics measures the web game, and where it shows ads they come from Google AdSense. In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, Google’s consent message asks before ads or analytics use cookies. In the US, the “Privacy choices” link at the bottom of each page lets you opt out of the sale or sharing of your information. Our web host, Vercel, keeps standard server logs such as IP addresses.
Clearing your browser’s data removes the progress saved in that browser, but not our copy. Progress in your account stays there; sign in again to bring it back.
4. How we use information, and our legal bases
| Purpose | Information used | Legal basis (EEA/UK) |
|---|---|---|
| Run the game: save progress, show leaderboards, Leagues, friends, trophies and Daily results | Player ID, game profile and gameplay data | Contract (providing the service you asked for) |
| Run the optional account: sign you in, back up and sync your progress | Email address (or Apple relay address), sign-in records, game data | Contract (providing the service you asked for) |
| Provide and restore Premium | Player ID, purchase information | Contract |
| Show ads in the free version | Advertising data | Consent where required (EEA/UK/CH via the consent form, and Apple’s tracking prompt for personalized ads on iOS); otherwise legitimate interests in funding a free game |
| Measure and improve the game, fix bugs, test new features, read puzzle ratings | Analytics, feature-test data, gameplay data, puzzle ratings | Consent where required for analytics storage (EEA/UK/CH); otherwise legitimate interests |
| Measure our own advertising campaigns | Attribution data (section 3.6) | Consent (EEA/UK/CH via the consent form; Apple’s tracking prompt on iOS); otherwise legitimate interests, with the opt-out in section 7 |
| Send reminders you allow (the Daily puzzle, your streak) | Settings on your device | Consent (your device’s notification permission) |
| Keep the community safe: filter names, handle reports, prevent cheating | Display names, reports, gameplay data | Legitimate interests in a safe and fair game |
| Answer support and privacy requests | Email and Player ID | Contract / legitimate interests / legal obligation |
| Comply with law, tax and accounting; enforce our Terms | Purchase records, relevant data | Legal obligation / legitimate interests |
We do not use your information for automated decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on you. League placement and promotion are automatic game mechanics only.
5. What other players can see
Your chosen display name and avatar are shown to other players on leaderboards; you can hide yourself in Settings.
- Leaderboards, Leagues, friends lists and player cards show your display name, avatar, title, League tier and medals, and game stats such as weekly points, levels completed, Dailies, streaks, total puzzles, Daily solve times and the month you started playing.
- Friend invites. If you share an invite link, the person who opens it (in the App or on our website) sees your display name.
- Shared results. When you tap Share, the App prepares a message (for example your result grid, time and a link) and hands it to the app you choose. What happens next is governed by that app.
To hide yourself, turn off “Show me on leaderboards” in Settings › Privacy & community. This hides your name and removes you from Leagues; your points still count privately. Players can report names that are offensive or impersonate someone; names are also checked against a blocklist, and a name reported by several players is hidden until we review it. You can hide any other player from your own view.
Please do not use your real name, email address, phone number or anything else that identifies you as your display name.
6. Who we share information with
We do not sell your information for money. We share it only as described here. Some of this sharing with ad and measurement partners may count as “selling” or “sharing” under US state privacy laws; see section 14.
6.1 Service providers (process data on our behalf)
| Provider | What they do | Data |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase Pte. Ltd., Singapore (servers in the USA) | Database, sign-in for the optional account, and server functions for game data | Section 3.2 data; for an account, its email address and sign-in records (section 3.11) |
| Google LLC, Firebase | Analytics; conversion measurement | Section 3.4 data |
| RevenueCat, Inc. | Subscription management, receipt validation, and reporting trials and purchases to Meta and Google for ad measurement | Player ID, section 3.3 data |
| Vercel Inc. | Hosts our websites: stringsgame.com (including the invite, Daily and delete-data pages) and our company site | IP address and standard web request data |
| EmailJS | Delivers messages sent through the contact form on www.frostbyteentertainment.com | Your name, email address and message |
| Namecheap Private Email (our support mailbox) and Resend (sign-in code emails) | Our email, and the sign-in code emails | Support and privacy emails; the address a sign-in code is sent to |
| Apple Inc. and Google LLC (app stores) | Distribution, payments, refunds | Handled under Apple’s and Google’s own privacy policies |
6.2 Advertising partners (independent controllers)
These partners collect data directly through their SDKs in the App and use it under their own privacy policies, including, where you allow it, to personalize ads and to improve their services:
- Google AdMob (Google LLC), our ad platform: how Google uses data from partner apps and Google’s Privacy Policy.
- Ad networks that bid for our ad space through AdMob mediation. We switch individual networks on or off in AdMob, so not every network serves ads at all times:
- Unity Ads (Unity Technologies): privacy policy.
- Meta Audience Network (Meta Platforms, Inc.): privacy policy.
- Pangle (operated by Bytedance Pte. Ltd. and its affiliates): privacy policy. Pangle’s SDK includes the TikTok Business SDK, which can also send device and app-event data to TikTok (TikTok’s privacy policy).
- Liftoff Monetize (Vungle) (Liftoff Mobile, Inc.): privacy policy.
- Mintegral (Mintegral International Limited and its affiliates): privacy policy.
- AppLovin (AppLovin Corporation): privacy policy.
6.3 Measurement partners
- Meta Platforms, Inc. (the Meta SDK, and Meta’s Conversions API through RevenueCat): privacy policy.
- Google LLC (Google Analytics for Firebase and Google Ads): privacy policy.
- Tenjin, Inc., if enabled: privacy policy. When we run AppLovin campaigns, AppLovin Corporation receives attribution results through Tenjin.
6.4 Other disclosures
- Other players, as described in section 5.
- Legal reasons: if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety and security of our players, the public or Frostbyte.
- Business transfers: if Frostbyte or the App is sold or merged, information may transfer to the new owner, who must honor this policy for data collected under it.
7. Ads, tracking and your choices
- iPhone and iPad (App Tracking Transparency). We never ask at launch. After you complete a puzzle, the App explains why it asks and then shows Apple’s prompt. If you choose “Ask App Not to Track”, the App and the SDKs in it cannot access your IDFA and ads are not personalized based on tracking. You can change this any time in iOS Settings › Privacy & Security › Tracking.
- EEA, UK and Switzerland. Before ads, analytics storage or ad measurement use your data, Google’s consent form asks for your choices (Consent, Manage options, or Do not consent). The ad networks in section 6.2 are listed in that form. You can change your choices any time in Settings › Privacy & community › Privacy choices. If you do not consent, you may still see non-personalized ads, and the Meta SDK and Tenjin do not run.
- US states and everywhere else. Turn on Settings › Privacy & community › Do not sell or share my info (shown when you are outside the EEA, the UK and Switzerland). While it is on, the App asks Google AdMob for restricted data processing and non-personalized ads, sets Meta Audience Network and the Meta SDK to Limited Data Use, turns off ad personalization in Google Analytics, opts you out of Tenjin, and stops sending your device identifiers to RevenueCat for ad measurement. The other ad networks that bid through AdMob (Unity Ads, Pangle, Liftoff Monetize, Mintegral and AppLovin) still receive ad requests with Google’s restricted-processing signal, but they may not all apply it in the same way. You can also email hello@stringsgame.com with your Player ID.
- Android. You can delete or reset your Advertising ID in your device settings (Settings › Privacy › Ads, or Google › Ads, depending on the device).
- Premium removes the banner and interstitial ads. Optional rewarded videos (watched in exchange for hints) may still be offered. The ad SDKs remain in the App and may still start up and contact their servers, but the App does not request banner or interstitial ads for Premium players.
- Analytics. In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, analytics storage follows your consent choices.
8. Notifications
If you allow notifications, the App schedules reminders on your device (for example, the Daily puzzle or your streak). These are local notifications created by the App; we do not send them from a server and we do not collect a push token. You can turn them off in Settings in the App or in your device settings.
9. Links and sharing
Invite, level and Daily links open the App, or stringsgame.com if the App isn’t installed. The website pages may show the inviter’s display name, as described in section 5. Our information pages (such as the Daily, level and invite pages) do not use advertising or analytics cookies; section 3.12 covers the web game. Links to other services (for example, our Facebook group or the App Store) take you to services with their own privacy policies.
10. Children
Strings is a general-audience word game and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has used the App, contact us at hello@stringsgame.com with the Player ID if you can and we will delete the associated data.
11. How long we keep information
| Information | How long |
|---|---|
| Game profile, puzzle results, stats, trophies, friends, progress, puzzle ratings | Until you ask us to delete it. One exception: a guest profile created by Strings 2.0 or stringsgame.com that was never signed in to an account and has no purchase is deleted after 13 months with no play on any of your devices. |
| League scoring records | Point-by-point records about 8 weeks; Daily board results about 60 days; weekly totals about 26 weeks; League results and tiers as long as your profile |
| Reports and moderation records | As long as the reported profile exists, then deleted with it |
| Subscription and purchase records | As long as needed for accounting, tax and dispute purposes, up to 7 years |
| Analytics (Firebase) | User-level data for 14 months; aggregated reports longer |
| Support and privacy emails | 24 months after the conversation ends |
| Server backups | Up to 7 days after deletion from the live database |
| Optional account (email address, sign-in records) | Until you delete the account |
| Cookies on stringsgame.com | The language choice and sign-in cookies up to 400 days, or until you sign out or clear them |
| Data held by ad and measurement partners | Under the partners’ own policies (section 6) |
| Data on your device | Until you uninstall the App or clear its data |
12. Deleting your data
Without an account, your Player ID is the key to your data. With an optional account, delete it in Settings › Account › Delete account or on our delete-account page: that deletes the account and its progress on every device. Data saved by older Strings versions, and copies in our server backups, are removed within 30 days.
- To delete: in the App, tap Settings › Support › Delete my data. It prepares an email with your Player ID and Firebase app instance ID; send it. You can also use our delete-data page, or email hello@stringsgame.com with “Delete my data” in the subject and your Player ID if you have it.
- What we delete: your profile, display name, avatar, puzzle results, stats, trophies, progress, League and leaderboard data, friendships, invites, reports you filed and puzzle ratings. We also ask RevenueCat to delete your customer record, Google to delete the analytics data tied to your app instance, and Tenjin to delete its data if it was enabled.
- When: within 30 days of a verified request (or sooner, if the law where you live requires it).
- What remains: purchase records that we must keep for legal or accounting reasons; data in backups until they expire; data that Apple, Google and our ad partners hold under their own policies; and anything other players already shared themselves.
- Uninstalling the App deletes the data on your device but not our server copy. A reinstall usually creates a new Player ID; on Android, a device backup may restore the old one.
- Subscriptions are not cancelled by deleting your data. Cancel in your App Store or Google Play account settings.
13. Your rights in the EEA, UK and Switzerland
You have the right to access your personal data, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to its processing (including processing based on legitimate interests), receive it in a portable format, and withdraw consent at any time (Settings › Privacy & community › Privacy choices, and Apple’s tracking setting). Withdrawing consent does not affect processing that already happened. To exercise these rights, contact hello@stringsgame.com with your Player ID. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority (for the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office; in Switzerland, the FDPIC).
14. Your rights in US states (including California)
Notice at collection. The categories of personal information we collect, and why, are set out in sections 3 and 4. Summary for the past 12 months:
| Category (California terms) | Examples | Collected | Disclosed for a business purpose to | “Sold” or “shared” (targeted advertising) |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| Sensitive personal information | None | No | No |
We use personal information only for the purposes in section 4, and we do not use or disclose sensitive personal information. We do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of consumers under 16.
Your rights. Depending on where you live (for example California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Utah or Virginia), you may have the right to:
- know what personal information we collect, use and disclose, and get a copy;
- correct it;
- delete it (section 12);
- opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of your personal information and of targeted advertising: turn on Settings › Privacy & community › Do not sell or share my info (section 7 explains exactly what it changes), or email hello@stringsgame.com with your Player ID. On iPhone, choosing “Ask App Not to Track” also stops tracking-based ads. On Android, deleting your Advertising ID limits it;
- not be discriminated against for exercising these rights;
- appeal our decision on your request, by replying to our decision email with “Appeal” in the subject. If we deny your appeal, you may contact your state Attorney General.
How to make a request. Email hello@stringsgame.com with your Player ID. Because we do not know who you are, we verify a request by matching the Player ID and, if needed, other details only the device holder would know (such as your display name and recent results). An authorized agent may make a request on your behalf with your signed permission. We respond within 45 days (extendable once by 45 days when the law allows).
California “Shine the Light”. We do not disclose personal information to third parties for their own direct marketing purposes as defined by California Civil Code section 1798.83.
15. International transfers
We are based in the United States, and our servers (Supabase, region us-east-2) and most of our providers are in the United States. Our database provider, Supabase Pte. Ltd. (65 Chulia Street #38-02/03, OCBC Centre, Singapore 049513), is a Singapore company; it stores our data on those US servers. If you play from outside the US, your information is transferred to and processed in the US and, for some ad partners (such as Pangle, TikTok and Mintegral), in other countries such as Singapore or China; see their policies. Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, these transfers rely on the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses (and the UK Addendum) or, for providers certified to it, the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and its UK and Swiss extensions.
16. Security
We use encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS) between the App and our servers and rely on providers with industry-standard security. No system is perfectly secure, and anyone who obtains your Player ID may be able to act as you in the game. Do not post your Player ID publicly.
17. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when the App or the law changes. We will post the new version here with a new “Last updated” date and, for material changes, tell you in the App before the change takes effect.
